The financial crisis and the subsequent economic downturn have triggered an unprecedented government response. A large stimulus package, bailouts for automakers, an expanded Federal Reserve balance sheet, the propping up of banks and insurance companies, and promises of a new wave of regulation all mark an extraordinary era of government expansion. The concurrent addition of ambitious proposals to reform the nation's health care delivery system and restructure the nation's energy economy has policymakers and the public asking: how much government is too much?

While much of the government expansion has been done in an effort to ease the economic downturn, many in American business, politics, and academia are worried about the negative impact this growth may have on job creation. Given the nation's employment situation-America's unemployment rate is pushing 10 percent, and there is a pressing need for restoring the 7 million jobs lost to the current recession and for creating 13 million more jobs over the next decade-this question is even more important.

At this National Chamber Foundation and AEI forum on key barriers to creating essential jobs, top experts will discuss the effect of government expansion on U.S. job creation. What effect will larger government have on the nation's investment climate? On interest rates? On entrepreneurial start-ups? Should policymakers, business owners, and everyday citizens be worried that government is getting too large? If so, what should be done? Attendees will hear from a panel of experts and will have the opportunity to participate in the closing roundtable discussion of the issues raised and questions posed.
