For millennia, the peace of the Sabbath has enriched those who observe it. But in an era of limitless connectivity, overscheduling and declining religious observance, fewer and fewer set aside a day of rest. Yet, argues former vice presidential candidate and Senator Joe Lieberman, ceasing all activity, including work, for a weekly Sabbath observance has profound benefit for people of all religions. In his new book, The Gift of Rest (Howard Books), Senator Lieberman offers a look at the beauty of the Sabbath observance – a practice that has anchored, ordered, and inspired his own life. Combining personal and political memoir with history and broadly informed religious reflection, Senator Lieberman will offer simple suggestions for introducing the Sabbath into your own life, and elaborate on how religion has affected his career in politics.
