Bubbleology
The New Science of Stock Market Winners and Losers
About This Event
Conservatives have always had an uneasy intellectual relationship with stock market bubbles. On one hand, they have often advocated almost blind faith in the rationality of markets. On the other hand, many conservatives were perplexed and skeptical as the dot.com companies soared. In
Bubbleology: The New Science of Stock Market Winners and Losers, (Crown Business, July 2002), AEI resident scholar Kevin A. Hassett draws lessons from the latest scientific literature on bubbles and argues that bubbles have acquired a rigorously established presence in our understanding of how markets work. There are specific instances--described in detail in the book--when markets cannot produce a perfectly rational outcome, and it is during these times that bubbles may form. Hassett also explores the philosophical and political implications of the existence of bubbles.
