In the Eye of the Storm
Can the Organization of American States Calm a Restless Hemisphere?
About This Event

The rise of populist politics in Latin America is fanning the flames of discontent among the region’s poor and marginalized populations, which have seen none of the windfall from many years of market reforms and democratization. The political and economic stability of the Western Hemisphere will soon be determined by a wave of national elections whose results will also directly impact American security and prosperity.

Can Latin America be kept on course? Will the Organization of American States (OAS) play a pivotal role in holding the Americas to a reform agenda that will generate sustained, equitable growth? Secretary General José Miguel Insulza will share his thoughts on the challenges in the region and the upcoming OAS General Assembly, which will be held June 4–6 in the Dominican Republic.
