Speaker biographies

Michael Auslin studies U.S.–East Asian relations, Asian security, U.S.–Japanese relations, and Asia-Pacific multilateral organizations as a resident scholar at AEI. Prior to joining the Institute, Mr. Auslin was an associate professor of history and senior research fellow at the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University. He has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, a Marshall Memorial Fellow by the German Marshall Fund, and a Fulbright and Japan Foundation Scholar. His writings on Japan and Japanese diplomacy include the books Negotiating with Imperialism: The Unequal Treaties and the Culture of Japanese Diplomacy (Harvard University Press, 2006) and Japan Society: Celebrating a Century, 1907–2007 (Japan Society, 2007).

Robert Alan Feldman is the director of the economic research department and managing director of Morgan Stanley Japan Securities Co., where he is responsible for forecasting the Japanese economy, financial markets, and policy developments. He is a regular commentator on World Business Satellite, the nightly business program of TV Tokyo. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 1998, Mr. Feldman was the chief economist for Japan for Salomon Brothers from 1990 until 1997. He worked for the International Monetary Fund from 1983 until 1989 in the Asian, European, and research departments. Mr. Feldman has also worked at both the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Chase Manhattan Bank. He has published four books: Japanese Financial Markets: Deficits, Dilemmas, and Deregulation (MIT Press, 1986), Nihon no Suijaku ("The Weakening of Japan"; Toyo Keizai, 1996), Nihon no Saiki ("Starting Over"; Toyo Keizai, 2001), and Kozo kaikaku no saki wo yomu ("Beyond Structural Reform"; Toyo Keizai, 2005).

Desmond Lachman joined AEI as a resident fellow after serving as a managing director and chief emerging market economic strategist at Salomon Smith Barney. He previously served as deputy director in the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Policy and Review Department and was active in staff formulation of IMF policies toward emerging markets. Mr. Lachman has written on topics such as economic policy, fund arrangements, monetary reform, import restrictions, and exchange rates. At AEI, he studies major emerging market economies and the role of multilateral lending institutions.
