Iraq's Future Discussed Today
April 15, 2003
We want to engage in the rebuilding of Iraq not only economically, but socially and politically too, claims foreign affairs minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz. Today, a conference will be held in An-Nasiria, where diplomats from USA, Great Britain, Australia and Poland will discuss the establishing of Iraq's new state institutions and the criteria for choosing companies that will participate in the rebuilding of Iraq. Most experts agree that this is Poland's big chance to become one of USA's three closest allies in Europe. Cimoszewicz mentions two objectives: the participation of Polish enterprises in the rebuilding of Iraq and the recovering of Poland's debts in Iraq. "We are going to An-Nasiria as an important partner of the coalition. We are to set the main goals regarding the administration of Iraq, the humanitarian aid, the building of a civil society and the economy", said the foreign affairs ministry's spokesman Boguslaw Majewski. Radek Sikorski of the American Enterprise Institute says that it would be a mistake if the Polish government failed to capitalise on Poland's symbolic, yet crutial participation in the Iraqi war.
