Washington, DC (February 27, 2014) – American Enterprise Institute (AEI) president Arthur C. Brooks announced today that AEI resident scholar Benjamin Zycher has been named to AEI’s John G. Searle Chair. At AEI, Zycher studies the effect of energy and environmental regulations on the US economy.

Before joining AEI, Zycher was an associate in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the US State Department and a senior economist for the RAND Corporation and the Arroyo Center at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He has taught economics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has served as a senior staff economist for the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, with responsibility for energy and environmental issues. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Western Economic Association International. Zycher’s last book, “Renewable Electricity Generation,” was published in 2011.

“I am delighted that Ben will continue to build on AEI’s tradition of examining energy and environmental policy and their effect on economic performance and opportunity,” Brooks said. “Ben is exceptionally suited to honor the Searle family legacy of working towards a more just, free, and prosperous society. My colleagues and I—as well as policymakers on Capitol Hill and far beyond—will be calling on Ben for his policy analysis and insights as America’s dynamic energy economy continues to transform our businesses, our international relationships, and our daily lives.”

“It is an honor to hold the Searle Chair at AEI,” said Zycher. “I am thrilled to have this opportunity to collaborate with other AEI scholars in the pursuit of economic liberty and the empirical, market-oriented policy reforms that Dan Searle and his father understood were so essential to economic growth and human progress.”

The John G. Searle Chair at AEI was established in 1998 by trustee of the Searle Family Trust Daniel C. Searle. John G. Searle was the grandson of the founder of the worldwide pharmaceutical company G. D. Searle & Company.
