In his new book Cage-Busting Leadership (Harvard Education Press 2013), education policy scholar Frederick (Rick) M. Hess aims to unveil what is possible for school, system, and state leaders despite the seemingly paralyzing rules, regulations, statutes, and contracts in K-12 education. Rife with stories of cage-busters, Cage-Busting Leadership will help current and aspiring leaders understand how to overcome regulatory and contractual impediments and address practical and political challenges.                                                        

In his most profound assault on the “culture of can’t” in K-12 education, Hess shows education stakeholders what they can do if they break from convention. School and system leaders have a wealth of opportunities to use limited talent, tools, time, and resources to promote great teaching and learning -- if they look for them and have the will to act on them.
