Our national security would be better served if the United States captured al-Asiri and kept him alive for questioning, so we can find out what he knows.

The United States has reportedly offered a plea deal to Majid Khan — a hardened al-Qaeda terrorist and close associate of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed — that could see him released from Guantanamo Bay within a few years.

The problem today is not simply that America is no longer waterboarding the Khalid Skeikh Mohammeds of the world; it is that, outside the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq, we are no longer capturing, detaining, and interrogating the Khalid Sheikh Mohammeds of the world at all.

Samir Khan was not "collateral damage." He was a sworn member of al-Qaeda who trained terrorists to kill his fellow Americans. And it is appalling that a representative of the US government he sought to destroy--whose citizens he wanted to "mow down" like grass--would offer "condolences" for his death.

Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-Va.) has long been on almost everyone's short list for the Republican vice presidential nomination. But now McDonnell's national security credentials have come into question, thanks to his mishandling of a bill passed by the Virginia General Assembly.

And that's the point, really. If captured alive, terrorists pose political problems for Obama. Where do we put them? How do we interrogate them? And, most pressingly, how do we try them? I don't think those are tough questions. But Obama does. So he prefers to kill these people outright, avoiding the questions altogether.

There is cause for celebration in the death of a deeply evil man with much blood on his hands and more innocent deaths in his mind, but no cause to waver in our determination to press forward in this conflict against a determined foe.

Will the president insist that high-value terrorist Umar Patek be taken into U.S. custody for interrogation? The answer will tell us how serious Obama is about stopping the next attack.
