Over the past decade, a number of remarkable organizations have cropped up that dramatically shape twenty-first century education reform. Joining this influx of groundbreaking, reform-minded organizations is Rice University’s Education Entrepreneurship Program (REEP), housed at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University.

When asked how to boost America’s educational competiveness, a staple response is the emphatic assertion that we need to be more like nation X.  But, just for a moment, let’s entertain the radical proposition that a better course is to tap into uniquely American strengths like federalism, entrepreneurial dynamism, and size and heterogeneity.

Americans look a lot more like the Chinese than Europeans when attitudes about entrepreneurship are evaluated. Americans are also very proud of their country, but are deeply dissatisfied with the current performance and feel that the country is on the wrong track.

The future is on the way.  Leading-edge innovators, we are assured, have already moved on, and are earnestly focusing on the just the sort of problems - manufacturing, energy, transportation (and I'd add healthcare) - that urgently require imaginative solutions.
