May 2013: The tax treatment of the family Taxing people as individuals would remove some of the important disparities between married couples and unmarried partners. While many other industrialized countries have individual-based income tax systems, the US system is family-based. Family-based tax systems create a number of difficulties that both reduce prosperity and create inequality across households and individuals. |

December 2012: Financing entitlements and promoting work: Does policy encourage early retirement? Policymakers concerned with the sustainability of entitlement programs frequently express interest in lengthening working lives. To achieve economic efficiency, government policy should be neutral with respect to retirement age—that is, retirement decisions should be based on productivity and preferences for leisure, rather than on taxes and government benefits. |

November 2012: Lessons from the euro crisis for the United States As the European economy slides ever deeper into recession, it is time for the United States to draw cautionary lessons from Europe's painful budget adjustment experience, especially as the dismal state of America's public finances now bears an uncomfortably striking resemblance to that of some of Europe's more troubled economies. |
