What critics are saying:

'Cage-busting Leadership' is full of valuable insights into the ability of “cage-busting” education leaders to solve the seemingly intractable problems of our K–12 system.

Dan Fishman, Philanthropy Roundtable

This is an inherently empowering book. It says to superintendents, principals, and other administrators: Reclaim the power that is rightfully yours; don't take the status quo as a given; and don't take no for an answer. No one would ever mistake Rick Hess for Oprah Winfrey, but their message is the same: You can do it!

Michael J. Petrilli, Executive Vice President, Thomas B. Fordham Institute

The book will help education leaders think outside the “cage” when developing solutions to difficult problems that we all are facing with regard to budget and reaching higher levels of performance.

Terry Holliday, Kentucky Commissioner of Education

Rick Hess has a new book out and it is worth reading. It's an informative and entertaining read about the actual and perceived (largely perceived) barriers that prevent many education leaders from doing their work.

David DeSchryver, Whiteboard Advisors

While I don't agree with everything in the book, it is a great read for anyone currently working on improving education [in New Bedford, MA]. The book mostly focuses on superintendents and principals, but I would add that parents, teachers, union officials and school board members can — and should — be 'cage-busting' leaders too.

David Prentiss

Rick Hess' new book title, "Cage-Busting Leadership," invokes images of Hulk crushing bars designed to hold him back.

Sarah Rosenberg, Education Sector

Hess has created an informative guide that should give leaders the confidence to bar-bust their way to effective education
leadership.

Brandon Wright, Fordham Institute

His ideas and the examples of how they've been implemented are dynamic and inspiring; in fact, at various points I found myself reconsidering my decision not to become a principal.

Only Good Books

Hess' book gives us inspiration and direction for ensuring that no child in America goes to a school governed by a culture
of 'can't.'
