Preserving the Future of Medicare: Three New Papers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, April 16, 2013

Today, the American Enterprise Institute releases three major research papers on the future of Medicare. This project, developed with the support of the Robert Wood Johnson foundation, lays out a clear plan for comprehensive Medicare reform.

The authors explain why reform matters, how to properly implement premium support, how to fix traditional Medicare, and how to structure a system of competitive bidding.

Policymakers on both sides of the aisle now acknowledge that action must be taken to ensure that seniors on Medicare continue to get the care they count on.

"President Obama’s budget advances modest reforms, but more must be done. We need to have the powers of market competition and patient choice to ensure that seniors health needs are met at a price we can all afford," said Joe Antos of AEI.

The Papers:
1.   The Role of Medicare Fee-for-Service in Inefficient Health Care Delivery – James C. Capretta
2.   Plan Competition and Consumer Choice in Medicare: The Case for Premium Support – Joseph Antos
3.   A Competitive Bidding Approach to Medicare Reform – Robert Coulam, Roger Feldman, and Bryan E. Dowd
